Traditional Illumination and Illustration
ÇAĞRI DİZDAR
Born in 1995 in Istanbul, Dizdar received his undergraduate education in illumination(tezhip) and miniature(tasvir) at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, graduating in 2020. Subsequently, he began postgraduate studies in the same field. Influenced by comic books since childhood, Dizdar started observing the parallels between traditional Islamic and Turkish book arts and comics during his undergraduate studies. In 2018-19, he studied comic art and printmaking at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna through the Erasmus program. Dizdar believes that viewing and comparing miniature (tasvir) art, which traditionally functioned as illustration, alongside western painting in the present day harms the discipline. Instead, he advocates for traditional book arts to be approached and interpreted alongside graphic design disciplines. Dizdar draws the most inspiration for his work from illustrations, comics, and video game concept designs.
