"Exsilium vita est"
March 2-8, 2024
The purpose of this internship project is to express that what everyone calls exile is a new beginning for us. The EXSILIUM exhibition, which brings together the art of weaving, which has been passed down as a cultural heritage through generations of education in the department, and the different weaving techniques offered by the modern age, is meeting its visitors at Nelumbo Studios in Kadıköy Moda.
EXILIUM consists of disciplines such as weaving, printing, tafting, and punching, attempting to enter the world of the subconscious, life, thoughts, decisions, and goals. Curated by Dilşad Ergün, the exhibition features works by Berfin Sude Çevik, Hande Erçel, Zeynep Naz Çaykara, and Dilşad Ergün herself.
The studio is open to visitors every day except Mondays for the EXILIUM 'Exile' Exhibition, which will run until March 8th.
Zeynep Çaykara, born in Istanbul, discovered her passion for art at an early age and graduated from a fine arts high school. Continuing her education at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Çaykara creates an original artistic language by blending different disciplines. She demonstrates her talent in various art forms such as painting, sculpture, and installation. Enjoying the pleasure of expressing different emotions and ideas in every branch of art, Çaykara's works highlight extraordinary details hidden in the ordinariness of daily life and different perspectives.
Zeynep Çaykara is an artist open to learning and development. Constantly evolving her own artistic language through the influence of different artists and disciplines, she adopts a production-oriented working style and is not afraid to try out new ideas..
Berfin Sude Çevik, originally from Istanbul, is interested in the Carpet Master Art branch in the Traditional Turkish Arts Department, which she started in 2021. While exploring the intricacies of weaving art, she also establishes a deep connection with the abstract world of mathematics. Bringing together these two disciplines, Berfin Sude Çevik skillfully utilizes mathematical operations and patterns in her artwork.
Berfin Sude Çevik gained valuable experience in the art sector by working as a gallery assistant for a period. These experiences expanded her horizon by allowing her to learn about the commercial and productive aspects of art.
Since childhood, she has been interested in both music and other fine arts. Her interest in various branches of art and her talent for mathematics have guided her on this unique artistic journey.
Hande Erçel has been interested in art since her childhood and managed to enter the Traditional Turkish Arts department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University to fulfill her passion. While pursuing her education, Erçel's acting career gained momentum, leading her to take a break from her studies due to a busy schedule. Despite this, Erçel did not disconnect from art and continued to produce oil paintings during this period.
With her passion for art and determination, Erçel returned to academia. Valuing her education and art greatly, Erçel continues her studies while also continuing her productions in oil painting and other art forms. Having also received education in the carpet art branch, Erçel has added the art of weaving to her repertoire, blending different disciplines and acquiring an identity as a versatile artist.
Hande Erçel sees production as a journey. She strives to create an original artistic language by combining the experiences and skills she has acquired in different disciplines. She eagerly awaits what dimension she will reach as an artist in the future.
Dilşad Ergün, originally from Istanbul, began studying Art History at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2015. Through the experiences gained during this process and the people encountered, the artist's interest in production became a reality.
During her studies in Art History, Dilşad Ergün also discovered her curiosity for different disciplines. This curiosity led her to the Traditional Turkish Arts department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. With the education she received in this department, her productions began to enrich with different disciplines.
Dilşad Ergün is currently focused on creating and developing her own artistic language. Producing original works using different materials and techniques, Dilşad Ergün experiences the excitement of existing in the endless race of creation.

Inspired by a real-life incident of domestic violence, this work aims to raise awareness against this unacceptable issue. Domestic violence and violence against women are problems that undermine human dignity and cannot be tolerated. Such violence violates basic human rights and has devastating effects on all segments of society. As a society, we must take a strong stance against perpetrators of violence and embrace each other with love for a brighter future.

Power is like a balancing dance. Too much can lead to arrogance and tyranny, while too little can result in weakness and helplessness. Wielding power correctly requires wisdom and responsibility. "Immortal" represents the ultimate embodiment of power.

The labyrinth resembles a cycle and a cubist form, becoming tangible at points that are just as abstract as our thoughts. Regardless of its shape, each path connects or does not connect to each other. This situation is also similar to the flow of our thoughts. Sometimes we proceed clearly and concretely, while other times we feel lost in a complex and abstract labyrinth.

I wandered around, questioned, and realized that the whole answer lies in balance. The slightest wave can either settle all the balances or displace them. Some waves are meant for the stones to finally settle in place, or for us to get lost in that spiral of balance.

Bond
No person who enters our lives does so in vain. We are all connected by invisible bonds.
Despite our differences, this reflects the fact that we are connected to each other by a common humanity; each of us is an important thread in the complex tapestry of existence. And through the good and bad experiences we gain thanks to each of these threads, we learn what is truly good for us.

Love at first sight is the sudden and unexpected feeling of deep attraction and passion for someone you have just met. An involuntary longing for a stranger we have never seen before in our lives takes over our body. We may not be able to understand this strange feeling physically, but no matter what, the soul finds its other half.

Thinking is perhaps one of the actions we do the most throughout our life cycle and cannot prevent. The ability to think is the most fundamental feature that distinguishes the human race from the animal kingdom. It is a fundamental skill that carries us forward, even though it can be difficult to control at times. When combined with emotions, thinking can become very intense and we feel the need to express it.

As we delve into the depths of art, we find ourselves most lost in the materialized form of our subconscious, a legacy passed down from our ancestors. It is an experience where you will confront your own world of thought as you enter it.
